The BREDOM ground-based DOAS network
Currently
four ground-based DOAS instruments are operated as part of BREDOM (Bremian DOAS
Network for Atmospheric Measurements):
In January 1993, the first instrument was installed on the roof of our Institute
in Bremen,
Germany. The second one was set up at the NDSC-Station at
Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard,
Norway in spring 1995. A third instrument has been deployed
to the UNEP building in Nairobi in July 2002.
Since October 2012, a new instrument is operating in
Athens, Greece. Additional instruments have been set-up temporarily in different stations
such as the Zugspitze (February - July 2003), Summit,
Greenland (August 2003 - September 2005), in
Mérida, Venezuela (March 2004 to November
2008), in
Heraklion on Crete as well as
on Sylt (March - September 2005). Our travelling instrument has participated in
several campaigns e.g. at OHP (NDSC campaign June 1996), Kaashidhoo (INDOEX
campaign February and March 1999), the Po valley (FORMAT
campaign July/August 2002 and August/September 2003), Andoya (NDACC
campaign February / March 2003) and Cabauw (DANDELIONS
I campaign
June / July 2005 and DANDELIONS
II campaign September 2006). Bremen MAXDOAS instruments have
also been operated on the TRANSBROM cruise from Japan to Australia (October 2009)
and both on the RV Sonne and on the Island of Bohey Dulang off the coast of
Borneo/Malaysia during the SHIVA campaign (November 2011). The BREDOM network is mainly designed for satellite validation. The location
of the the stations facilitates investigation and comparison of
processes at low and middle latitudes and inside and outside of the polar
vortex.
All stationary instruments are measuring continuously.
That is at Ny-Ålesund only outside of the polar winter.
Using the zenith-viewing direction for stratospheric species and the horizon
viewing measurements for tropospheric retrievals, stratospheric column amounts of
the trace gases Ozone, NO2, BrO and OClO are retrieved routinely, and
tropospheric columns and profiles of NO2, HCHO, CHOCHO, IO, and H2O can also be
determined.
