The German validation community set-up a wide range of instruments for the validation of SCIAMACHY. The Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) at the University of Bremen operates DOAS instruments at Summit (Greenland), Ny Alesund (Spitzbergen), Bremen, Merida (Venezuela), and Nairobi (Kenia). In 2003, the Merida instrument was temporarily installed at Zugspitze (Germany). FTIR instruments operate in Bremen, Ny-Alesund and on-board the Polarstern during the cruises from Arctic to Antarctica and vice versa. Microwave instruments are set-up in Bremen, Ny-Alesund and Merida. In Bremen, also a sun-/sky-radioeter as aerosol instrument is operating.
All German stations for the validation can be seen on the plot (click on the image f0r larger version), in 2005 all instruments are still operational. UV-vis zenith-sky spectroscopy using the DOAS technique provides column amounts of O3, NO2, BrO, and OClO. From Fourier Transform Spectroscopy measurements in the UV, visible, and IR spectral regions total columns and number density profiles of O3, NO2, H2O, CO, N2O, CO2, H2CO, and CH4 as well as other molecules not covered by SCIAMACHY can be derived. Microwave radiometers provide profiles of O3, H2O, and ClO. Backscatter lidars provide vertical distributions of aerosol and cloud properties. In addition, from the Rayleigh backscattered signal temperature profiles in the stratosphere and mesosphere can be derived. A backscatter lidar will be operated on a campaign basis in Esrange/Kiruna.
