The MINOS (Mediterranean Intensive Oxidant Study) project is an international
atmospheric research program coordinated by the Max-Planck-Institute for
Chemistry. The objective of MINOS is to quantify the main processes involved in
the Mediterranean pollution build-up
- Transport of pollution from Europe and from remote sources
- Chemical mechanisms that contribute to the build-up of oxidants and
aerosols
- Export of pollutants to the global environment, e.g. towards SE Asia
In support of MINOS,
tropospheric excess columns of NO2 as derived from measurements of the Global
Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME) are made available on this site. The
tropospheric excess column is defined as the integrated tropospheric NO2
amount that is in excess of that measured above a clean air reference sector,
usually the Pacific. As plots shown on this page are derived from GOME Near Real
Time measurements (courtesy of ESA/ESRIN/DLR), no data from the Pacific sector
are available. We therefore use the Atlantic as a clean air reference, which
might lead to underestimation of the real tropospheric columns. Please note,
that no cloud clearance has been applied to the data. Therefore, regions covered
with clouds can be misinterpreted as regions with low tropospheric NO2
abundances!

The plots below are produced automatically and are based on the GOME Near
Real Time data. Usually, plots should be available with a delay of one day, but
as there is no extra funding for this web page, maintenance does not have a high
